Education Overview 

Myra Varnado, BS, RN, CWOCN, CFCN, of Corstrata will be presenting this education. This program provides an overview of advanced wound dressings by category and the indications for their use, with discussion of scientific wound healing principles specific dressing types address. Also discussed are documentation components that are critical to accurately and adequately assess and manage wounds. Patient education handouts are provided.

The Learning Objectives for this session are:

  • Understanding which dressing is appropriate for a wound – and why that is the case
  • Review of the different wound dressing types and intended uses
  • Wound assessment documentation basics
  • Wound management documentation components

About the Educator – Myra Varnado, BS, RN, CWOCN, CFCN, Corstrata

Myra is a Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Specialist with extensive clinical expertise in Pressure Ulcer and Diabetes Foot Ulcer Prevention and Management. She graduated from the Emory University WOC Nursing Education Program and has authored numerous publications on WOC topics. On behalf of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society, she authored the Clinical Practice Guidelines that appear on the AHRQ website. For the past 16 years, she has served on the WOCN Wound Guidelines Task Force and is the primary author of the WOCN Clinical Practice Guideline: “Management of Wounds in Patients with Lower Extremity Neuropathic Disease." 

Additionally, Ms. Varnado has published numerous wound related papers on topics including Diabetes Charcot foot management, frostbite, biofilm, telemedicine and tissue based products. During her tenure with the LSU Diabetes Foot Program and LSU Hospitals, she successfully implemented five remote telemedicine diabetes foot programs in southern Louisiana.
