Education Overview

Myra Varnado of Corstrata is back to provide education on this and to give an understanding for the general nursing management of colostomies and ileostomies including: 

  • Normal GI function
  • Expected effluent character and volume
  • Specific complicating factors
  • Introduction to a variety of Ostomy appliance types and their appropriate use 

The target audience for this education is: Director of Nursing, Treatment/Staff Nurse, Agency Administrator, and Director of Quality/Performance Improvement.

About the Educator

Myra Varnado, BS, RN, CWON, CFCN, Director of Clinical Wound Services for Corstrata, is a Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Specialist with extensive clinical expertise in Pressure Ulcer and Diabetes Foot Ulcer Prevention and Management. She graduated from the Emory University WOC Nursing Education Program and has authored numerous publications on WOC topics. On behalf of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society, she authored the Clinical Practice Guidelines that appear on the AHRQ website. For the past 16 years, she has served on the WOCN Wound Guidelines Task Force and is the primary author of the WOCN Clinical Practice Guideline: “Management of Wounds in Patients with Lower Extremity Neuropathic Disease”. 

Additionally, Ms. Varnado has published numerous wound related papers on topics including Diabetes Charcot foot management, frostbite, biofilm, telemedicine and tissue based products. During her tenure with the LSU Diabetes Foot Program and LSU Hospitals, she successfully implemented five remote telemedicine diabetes foot programs in southern Louisiana.
